The Best Gutter Covers Are Worth the Investment

If you’re like many homeowners, you may be wondering if gutter covers are worth the investment. And, like most products, the answer depends on whether you choose the best gutter covers or a cheap product you can install yourself. To help you decide if this is an investment that makes sense for you, let’s take a look at common problems you can avoid by installing a gutter protection system.

Clogged Gutters or Repeated Gutter Cleanings

Ideally, you’re already cleaning your gutters twice a year or hiring a company to do this for you. However, if this is a task you’ve neglected, you may learn the hard way that clogged gutters can do significant damage to your home. Here are a few types of damage clogged gutters can cause:

  • Foundation damage
  • Water damage to the basement, walls or attic
  • Shingle damage
  • Fascia & roof rot
  • Gutter damage

Most of these repairs cost more than even the best gutter guard products installed by a professional.

Ice Dams

When conditions are right, ice dams form along the eaves of a roof in winter, usually facilitated by clogged gutters. When snowmelt can’t drain into the gutters and down the downspouts, you end up with ice dams and icicles. The heavy ice accumulation can damage shingles. It can also lead to your gutters pulling away from your home. As the dammed water melts and sits on the roof, you’ll soon have a roof leak and potentially severe damage.

Mold, Mildew & Water Damage in Your Home

Eventually, the water in clogged gutters has to go somewhere. Either it overflows on the inside or outside of the gutters. Water follows the path of least resistance, so if it finds a way over the gutters and into your home, that water will go into the attic or down your walls. This can lead to ruined insulation and mold growth behind your walls. Once mold is discovered, the expense to get rid of it is significant.

Any water damage in your home costs a lot to remediate. It often includes replacing drywall, trim and sometimes even flooring. This is one of the most expensive costs associated with clogged or neglected gutters.

At some point, there will be so little water that you’ll begin to see mold, mildew and algae form on and in your gutters. You may even notice it on the fascia from the water that leaked against the home for so long. Although the solution to gutters covered in mildew or algae is a good cleaning, you’ll end up spending time to take care of it.

Things to Ask When Considering a Gutter Company

If you’re looking for a team of contractors to install new gutters on your home and garage, it’s important you ask the right questions so you can be sure you’re getting a company you can trust to perform high-quality work. Here are a few of the most important questions to ask gutter companies in Oklahoma City, OK.

Are you licensed?

You should always verify the credentials of anyone you have doing any kind of contract work on your home, especially when you consider the financial investment you’re putting into getting your new gutters. You should always work with a contractor that is licensed, bonded and insured. This offers you considerable protection from financial liability if something goes wrong, and licensure ensures the contractor you’ve chosen can be trusted to do high-quality work on your property.

Can you give me a quote?

Any contractor should be understanding that you will spend some time shopping around for the best prices before you actually make a decision. If a contractor shies away or flat-out refuses to give you a quote for your job, this is a massive red flag. Avoid any company that does not give you a quote, or a company that just gives you a quote over the phone rather than coming out and first measuring your roofline.

Is the work protected with a warranty?

This is another means of protecting your investment. You should only work with contractors who offer warranties on their work. This indicates they stand behind the quality of their workmanship and products. Make sure you get any warranties or other guarantees in writing so you can easily refer back to them and exercise your rights if necessary.

What kind of gutters should I get?

There are a variety of gutter options available to homeowners, and it can’t hurt you to seek out the opinion of the gutter professionals with regard to which kind you should purchase. At the very least, you’ll typically have the option of 5” or 6” K-form gutters or 6” fascia gutters. The type of gutter that works best for you depends on the structure of your home and the layout of your property. You’ll also need to remember downspouts—the orientation and layout of downspouts will also be impacted by the layout of your property and your particular drainage needs.

Can you install gutter guards?

If you want to cut down the amount of time you have to spend cleaning out your gutters a couple times a year, gutter guards can be a highly useful feature to add on to your gutters, particularly if you have a lot of trees around your property. Gutter guards keep your gutters from getting clogged up so they can operate smoothly. If you know you want gutter guards, you’ll want to search out a gutter company that installs them.

These are just a few examples of important questions to ask gutter companies in Oklahoma City, OK. For more information about how to proceed with your gutter installation, contact L & S Seamless Guttering today.

Keep Commercial Driveways Clean and Safe This Winter

Winter is here once again, and with it brings extreme weather. Snowstorms, winds, sleet, you name it — expect temperatures to tumble in the months to come. This is why it’s so important to maintain your driveway during this time of the year. Keeping your driveway clean, in fact, will prevent people from slipping over slippery surfaces and keep your business looking great.

Why Should You Invest in Driveway Cleaning?

Adverse winter weather can have a detrimental impact on your driveways. Falling leaves and snow can make these areas unsightly and dangerous, especially if you have a business to run. Concrete, in particular, can become an eyesore if it’s full of leaves and rocks and other items that have blown during strong winds. As concrete covers so much of your driveway area, this can soon become a nuisance.

What’s the Solution?

Investing in pressure washing will keep your commercial concrete driveways clean during this time of the year. This way you can keep these areas safe and increase curb appeal. If you expect a significant amount of footfall during this time of the year, it just makes sense to pay for pressure washing. Otherwise, you could lose customers or clients.

What About Superior Pressure Washing?

Superior Pressure Washing has the experience and reputation you need when keeping your concrete driveways clean and safe at this time of the year. This company will use a commercial pressure washing solution that won’t damage your surfaces and provide you with a return on your investment.

If I Have a Chimney Cap, Can Santa Still Come Down with Presents?

A chimney cap in the home can raise a lot of questions and concerns. What is the best chimney cap? Is a chimney cap necessary? Will it really protect my home from critters? Will it keep the moisture out? How do I know if I got the right one? Chimney caps offer protection for our homes, but there is one jet setter around making deliveries this season that we certainly don’t want to miss.

Santa sending presents down a chimney.

With all these other questions, none other one rings louder than, Can Santa still come to my house?

When we learned the story—and tell the story to our kids—about Santa and his adventures with his reindeer distributing gifts, determining which ones of us are good or bad, no one ever talked about whether or not Santa himself faced the obstacle of the chimney cap. Was a chimney cap even there? If there weren’t any chimney caps in the early days, surely Santa must have encountered some throughout all these years.

And yet, he still made it into all the homes to deliver presents.

Yes, that’s the story we’re sticking to—for the sake of our children. One day one of them is going to catch the fact that there is something covering up our chimney and ask us about it. We wonder how no one has never addressed this before. Obviously, as the tale is told, Santa never let anything deter him from his mission. Most definitely not a simple chimney cap.

So the question really is: how the heck did Santa deal with that chimney cap?

Here’s the thing about chimney caps: they can always be uncapped. Just like they need to be secured onto the chimney, they can always be removed. And Santa is no stranger to handiwork. Who do you think helps train all those elves?

When Santa encounters these chimney caps, he removes them and then replaces them for us so he doesn’t leave any destruction behind. Depending on what type of chimney cap it is (single-flue, inside-mount, crown-mount, what have you), Santa performs a different procedure for each case. Before we overanalyze the scenario about how he pulls this off so quickly and quietly, let’s just remember he’s Santa. He’s not one for us to completely understand.

To answer the question in regards to your chimney cap, “Can Santa still come to my house?”: Yes. Of course, he can! He’s Santa!

So don’t worry about him when choosing your next chimney cap—be sure to purchase the most secure and durable one that will protect your home from unnecessary clutter and other potential damages. At Ned Stevens, we stock top quality chimney caps – and when you have yours installed this year, we can promise you a Santa-friendly installation!

6 Steps to Installing a Strong Gutter System

Your gutter system protects your home in multiple ways. From funneling rainwater away from your foundation to preventing soil erosion around your home, you want to make sure you have one that’s properly installed so it can stand up to rain and snow. Here are some tips from some expert gutter guard installers who are part of the Gutter Helmet® team.

Choose the Right Type of Gutter

If you haven’t realized it already, gutters come in a range of sizes, materials and gauges. The K-style aluminum gutter in a five-inch width is the standard for most residential installations. Gutter gauge, or thickness, is equally important. Medium-weight .027-gauge aluminum is considered the industry standard, while heavyweight .032-gauge is ideal for long gutter runs.

Understand the Importance of Pitch

One of the biggest mistakes made by homeowners is installing gutters level. If you mistakenly do this, your gutters won’t drain effectively. You want a very gradual pitch of one to two inches of decline toward the downspout for every 40 feet in length. This allows water to flow properly without overwhelming the system.

Install Proper Support

Although there are different ways to hang a gutter, make sure you follow the gutter manufacturer’s recommendations for its gutters. This includes spacing the hangers properly. If you fail to include sufficient support and you have heavy water or snow accumulation in your gutters, you may end up with gutters that sag or pull away from your home. The typical hanger spacing recommendation is no more than 32 inches apart.

Know the Proper Installation Location

Rather than sitting at the exact edge of the roof, a gutter should be installed a few inches under the roof to catch all the water runoff. Drip edge flashing installed under the first layer of shingles further assists water in flowing from the edge of the roof into the gutter.

Seamless Gutters Are Better

If you’re looking for gutters with the least chance of leaking, go seamless. Seams are the weakest points in a gutter system, so plan for as few seams as possible. You may not have the tools to create seamless gutters so consider having a contractor in your area produce seamless sections for you to avoid potential problems associated with sectional gutters.

Work with a Gutter Helmet® Gutter Guard Installer

Top off your new gutter system with Gutter Helmet® gutter covers. If you’ve been checking gutter cover reviews, no doubt you’ve noticed the best reviews of gutter guards are for Gutter Helmet products. Solving the 5 Most Common Gutter Problems

If your gutter system is working properly, it’s going to protect your home from costly water damage. However, if there are problems going on with your gutters, they’re not going to do their job. Gutters are meant to save you time, stress, and money in the long run, but you’ve got to maintain them and keep them free of any problems for them to work.

At Tacoma Gutter Service, we’ve seen the gamut of gutter problems. Some aren’t always so obvious, and some have solutions that you can easily take care of yourself—you just need to know how to identify them. Here are a few problems to keep an eye out for throughout the year.

Clogged Gutters

One of the most common gutter issues is also one of the easiest to remedy—clogged gutters. If you don’t make it a habit of regularly cleaning your gutters, they can become blocked with debris like leaves, dirt, twigs, and even bird nests. When gutters become clogged, they can cause a number of issues, including overflowing, which can lead to expensive foundation and roof damage.

Solution: The easiest solution for clogged gutters is actually prevention. It’s a good idea to check out and clean out your gutters seasonally, and especially after a big wind storm. If you’re not sure the best way to clean out your gutters (or even if you’re afraid of heights), don’t hesitate to call a professional to do the job for you.

Sagging Gutters

Over time, your gutters can begin to sag and even start pulling away from your home. This usually occurs if your gutters haven’t been cleaned or if water starts pooling within them; these add weight to the gutters, which weakens the fascia and causes the problem.

Solution: The only solution for sagging gutters is to have a team of professionals replace the hardware. Depending on how bad the damage is, you may need to hire contractors to fix your siding as well. Then, once this problem is fixed you’ll need to prevent the issue from happening again by ensuring you keep your gutters clean and clear of debris.

Leaks

One of the easiest ways to identify leaks is to check for dripping water while you clean out your gutters. If left in disrepair, leaks can cause damage to your roof, siding, and foundation.

Solution: Leaky gutters can be fixed by sealing holes with caulk, from the inside. If holes are too big, or the area around them has become rusted, the best solution is to replace that segment of gutter.

Incorrectly Positioned Downspouts

The point of gutters is to keep water from collecting at around your home’s foundation; for them to do that, the downspouts have got to be positioned far enough from your home. If they’re too close, water will still pool and can still potentially cause damage. Before the next big storm, make sure your downspouts extend at least two feet away from your exterior.

Solution: If your downspouts are too close to your home, you may want to ask a professional gutter team to add extensions. This will give them the extra length needed to keep runoff water far from your foundation.

Improper Pitch

Gutters need a slight pitch to for rainwater to reach the downspouts and drain properly. If your gutter system doesn’t have a decent pitch, you’ll end up dealing with standing water; this can cause your gutters to rust or begin to sag. It can also turn your gutters into an attractive home for pests—which comes with its own problems.

Solution: If you notice standing water in your gutters or the water coming out of your downspout seems to wane, you should call a professional to have them check your pitch. Our team will be able to assess the issue and fix the damage if necessary.
